It must be ThemeDay at the CaptStL…
There is a wonderful, thought-provoking and lucid article today at the NYT.
Here are a few bullet points:
- If Americans reduced their meat consumption by 20% it would result in the environmental equivalent of everyone switching from driving a Camry to a Prius.
- 2.2 pounds of beef is responsible for for the equivalent amount of C02 emitted by a car every 155 miles
- 2.2 pounds of beef burns enough every to light a 100 watt bulb for almost 20 days
- In 1961, the world’s meat consumption was 71 million tons. In 2007 – 284 million tons. That figure is expected to DOUBLE by 2050.
One solution could be what they charmingly term meat without feet. It very well could be that meat in the future will be produced by growing animal cells in a nutrient environment and manipulating these cells into burgers and steaks.
From science fiction to science FACT!
Take a few moments to read it. I’ll wait.
